We asked our committee what they thought was the best thing about having been part of Winchester Hub this year. Here's their responses:

What's been the best moment of this year?

Feeling Empowered

The Volunteering and Community Champions Awards

'The Volunteering and Community Champions Awards [was my favourite moment] because it was so great to see so many super people recognised for all the super things they do.' - Aaron, Student Executive

The Volunteering and Community Champions Awards are an opportunity for Winchester's individual volunteers and volunteering groups to be commended for the great work they do throughout the year. Hampshire Hub Day

Winchester Hub is a local branch of the national charity, Student Hubs. There are six other branches in the UK, the closest of these being in Southampton. Hampshire Hub day is a chance for the students from Winchester and Southampton Hubs to meet in an informal setting and get to know each other.

The first Hampshire Hub day took place last year, which we very much wish to continue in the future! Apply for next year's committee here.

Project SOUP

As part of our fundraising efforts, we hosted two Project SOUP events this year. Our student committee came together to wash, peel, and prep vegetables to make some nutritious, vegan soup. We enjoyed distributing these in the Food Hall, and the event proved very popular!

Sustainable eating is important to us, so our ingredients were kindly donated by local supermarkets to reduce waste. Our leftovers even were given away to students for free, so that nothing was thrown away.

Friendship and Personal Growth

'My favourite moment this year has been watching the committee develop their skills, both within their roles and personally. I believe a massive part of Winchester Hub is the friendships and support networks you develop through taking part. It has been so amazing to watch people grow, with coordinators running their own training and being more confident in their abilities.' - Alice, Student Executive

A big part of our Student Executives' role is to support the rest of our team in their roles, offering advice and training sessions to aid the committee's personally and professionally. This year, we've talked about reducing stress, leadership styles, and Belbin team roles, so that our committee can learn more about themselves and how they work. Taking the Lead in Youth Theatre

Our Youth Theatre programme provides free performing arts sessions to local children aged 7-11. This year, the children have been working hard on a production of Peter Pan. Sadly, we've had to cancel this performance due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but we are hoping to continue our work once it is safe to do so.

Meeting New People

The Fundraising and Events team organise lots of great events throughout the year, both to raise money and awareness for our projects and other worthy causes. Of course, running successful events means collaborating with other student groups and departments in the university, which means they are often approaching and working with new people!

Our committee are natural collaborators, so if you're someone who enjoys meeting new faces and making connections, it's not too late to apply for our committee in 2020/21.
